Halloween Party

We had a wonderful, little Halloween party. It included costumes, a couple Halloween crafts and games, a little trick or treating and ended with Halloween shaped chicken nuggets and tatortots. Here are some pictures. Oh and...Halloween certainly wasn't the same without Candy Corn.

Halloween!

Halloween is probably one of my favorite holidays (next to of course Martin Luther King day, that often is so that I have no school on my birthday...) and we have had a wonderful time celebrating this wonderful, fabulous, exciting holiday here!

Last week we spent the morning making sugar cookies (thanks mom!)

Then today, we went in search of a pumpkin...we found three perfect little pumpkins and really enjoyed ourselves. We made jack o' lanterns and baked pumpkin seeds.

I am looking forward to tomorrow's Halloween Party!

Osnabrück

This past weekend I had the joy of visiting family in Osnabrück and Engelern. It was relaxing and very fun. I arrived Friday evening and spent the time chatting and drinking coffee in a place in the city center with Doris, Sabrina, Doris's daughter, a good friend of Sabrina's and three little munchins Luna, Hannah, and Leon. When we woke up Saturday morning, we relaxed a bit before heading to the weekly market and the flea market. At the weekly market we picked out a pumpkin, some fresh, homemade honey, and drank delicious fresh pressed carrot juice. We headed to the flea market a little outside the city to visit Marian who had a stand there. Doris, Leon and I ate lunch and got some ice cream before heading home. Once home, Leon and I got to play lots of legos and build cool towers but then it was time for bed :( Doris and I stayed up talking for a bit before we both headed off to bed as well. On Sunday (we got an extra hour!!) we drove to Engelern to have lunch with Tante Mia and then later coffee and tea with many, many Rickes. It was really fun sitting in the middle of the table and trying understand all the different conversations going on around me. We (Doris, Leon, and I, as well as Fabian (a cousin of sorts) and his friend Michael) left and drove to the Osnabrück bahnhof. Fabian, Michael, and I ran to try to catch the train to head back to Hannover but it wasn't supposed to be, I guess. We missed it by 1 minute. So we waited for two hours until the next train came. We played cards the whole way home. I kicked butt...haha just kidding. They taught me a new game. As you can imagine, it was wonderful to spend the weekend with family.

The pictures are of Sabrina, Luna petting a horse, Leon taking a picture of me taking a picture, Luna and I, and Doris and Leon.

Delicious honey cookie recipe to come....

Paris Paris Paris

Needless to say, I had a wonderful time visiting Valeska and Julien in Paris. I think the first picture here may be the only one where Valeska and I are both acting normal.

The Eiffel Tower...see I really was there. In the second picture of the Tower look very very closely at the bottom of the picture and you will see me. I asked a woman to take a picture of me with the tower and this is how it turned out...haha

Here are stairs to climb up the tower. I opted to climb up the first two levels because I didn't feel like waiting three hours for the elevator and I have legs, right? This last picture of me pinching the Eiffel Tower is for Jackie.

Pictured here are two of the most beautiful churches I have ever seen. The first two pictures of of Notre Dame. It is from head to toe gothic. I was completely amazed at the outside and the inside. The next church is the Sacred Heart Basilica on the other side of town. This church is also amazing.

On Friday evening, Valeska and I visited the Louvre. It was beautiful. Here is a picture of me admiring the Mona Lisa. Unfortunately we had to stand this far away for security reasons.

On Monday morning I headed to Versailles were I walked through the beautiful castle gardens and then took an audio tour of Marie Antoinette's little hideaway (ok so it's not so little).

On Tuesday morning Julien and I visited a very creepy place...a maze of underground tunnels where there are the bones of thousands of Parisians. In the late 17 hundreds there were many disease problems so the people of Paris decided to excavate all the people in the city and place there bones 20 m underground. We walked through 1.6 km of stacked up bones (as shown in this picture) but if there are pathways under almost the whole city.

Valeska and Amy (and Julien)'s Paris Adventure

Oh my goodness...Paris was amazing.

I am going to add pictures very soon, but I did most of my journaling/blogging on a map I created of Paris (like I did for Hamburg). Make sure to click on the bubbles and the lines so you can read my description and reactions. If nothing else, make sure to read "funny story".

I will let you know when I have Saturday and a couple other details finished...Enjoy!

Fall Break

So when I originally heard that there was a fall break, Herbstferien if you will, I was expecting something similiar to Xavier's fall break 2 days...well I came to find out that it is a two week break! Cool!

So Friday was the last day of school (well Thrusday for me because I don't have class on Fridays normally) and the break is off to a great start! This weekend was really enjoyable. I went with a few au pairs to Hannover's Oktoberfest where we enjoyed a couple rides.

Elinor (Swedish) and I and Chelsey (from the states) and Jenna (Canadian)

Then on Saturday afternoon I watched my first handball game...interesting... after the game the team and I headed to town and enjoyed a relaxing night at a bar in Altstadt (one of my favorite parts of the city). And today, Sunday, has been a very nice day of writing a few emails and reading and playing Settlers of Catan with Petra and Christian after the kids went to bed. I lost both games but learned the Ore in German is Erz - always good for normal conversation.

But what I am most looking forward to during this wonderful Herbstferien is my trip to Paris! I am headed out Thursday after lunch, Petra offered to bring me to the airport, and arriving in France around 3:30 to spend (almost) 6 glorious days with Valeska! I am headed there with a bit of money, an empty camera card, and plenty of battery life!

I hope you all have a nice week. Enjoy the beautiful weather that I hear Ohio is having. I miss everyone!

RE: Spanish Class

Note: Although my Spanish class is a bit difficult, I love it! Also, I did some reflecting on my bike ride home, I realized I didn't do very well adjusting to life without school. I am still, voluntarily in the classroom 18 hours a week! haha

Spanish Class

So I brilliantly decided that it was necessary for me to keep up my Spanish while I am working here in Alemania (spanish for Germany...). Thankfully I wasn't too much of an over-achiever and decided for a one night a week Spanish course, mostly just so I won't lose what I do know, not really to improve my Spanish.

Well, the classes started last week and the teacher (from Chile) is really nice and there location is nice because it is a short bike ride from my house, but....

everything is explained in German....ahh!

Now, don't get me wrong, I didn't expect it to be explained in English, but I thought it would be explained in Spanish....oh no...definately German! haha

Well, I already paid for the class so I guess I will keep attending.

Handball

Ok another night of Handball practice has come and gone and I have still yet to read the rules...opps haha Well hopefully I will by Wednesday...

Vreden

So this past weekend was a long weekend. Friday was German Reunification Day (Tag der Deutschen Einheit) so everyone was off! Alexandra Robers (the daughter of one of my mom's cousins) was near Hannover and picked me up to take me to see the relatives. It was wonderful.

We drove home Thursday night and went almost right to bed. Then Friday morning Alexandra, Christa (her mom), Stefanie and Melanie (more daughters of cousins...they are all my age-ish), and I went shopping in Holland for the day. It was packed...with Germans haha. It wasn't a holiday for the Hollandish. Then almost as soon as we got home Alexandra and I went to Oeding (15 Kilometers from Vreden) and cooked dinner with Stefanie and Melanie at their house. We made a delicious spaghetti - homemade sauce and everything! - and then played a dice game , visited a bit with their parents (my mom's cousins) and laughed much of the night away.

Saturday Alexandra and I spent visiting her Oma, my great aunt, Tante Katharina. It was nice to see her. We went around the city and enjoyed a day with no rain an sunny weather. Then Alexandra and I went to the grocery, baked a cake (oooo it was so delicious), and got ready for the evening. Saturday night Alexandra had a few of her girlfriends over and we drank some homemade strawbery liquor from Stefanie and played Cranium and Activity (a game similar to cranium except only with drawing, pantomiming, and explaining). The games were (obviously) played in German, but I will never lose my competitive spirit and would like you all to know that my team won Cranium...(and, yes, I did help haha).

Sunday was a lazy day. We visited the last of Tante Katharina's three children, Georg and his family who also live in Vreden. Then we enjoyed a very nice dinner that Christa made. I headed home by train Sunday night. Alexandra is heading to Hamburg Monday night (tonight) for work tomorrow.

It was just a wonderful weekend of relaxation, family time, and lots of laughing, chocolate, and some high quality - aka Hollandish - black licorice...what can I say I am related to my Oma.
